Lung Cancer

Description: Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs. It is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). 

Signs and Symptoms: 

  • Cough that doesn't go away 
  • Coughing up blood 
  • Chest pain that gets worse with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing 
  • Shortness of breath 
  • Hoarseness 
  • Unexplained weight loss 
  • Feeling tired all the time 

Diagnosis: 

  • Chest X-ray: Creates an image of the lungs and heart 
  • CT scan: Creates detailed cross-sectional images of the chest 
  • PET scan: Uses radioactive dye to show areas of increased activity, which may indicate cancer 
  • Biopsy: Removing a small tissue sample for examination under a microscope 

Treatment Options: 

  • Surgery: To remove the tumor or a portion of the lung 
  • Radiation therapy: Uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells 
  • Chemotherapy: Uses drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body 
  • Immunotherapy: Helps the body's immune system fight cancer cells
