Lymphoma

Description: Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of the body's immune system. The lymphatic system helps fight infection by transporting white blood cells throughout the body. Lymphoma can start in any part of the lymphatic system, including the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and bone marrow. 

There are two main types of lymphoma: 

  • Hodgkin lymphoma:?Usually has a better prognosis than non-Hodgkin lymphoma. 
  • Non-Hodgkin lymphoma:?More common type of lymphoma,?with many subtypes. 

Signs and Symptoms: 

  • Enlarged lymph nodes (painless or painful) 
  • Fever 
  • Night sweats 
  • Unexplained weight loss 
  • Fatigue 
  • Itchy skin 

Diagnosis: 

  • Physical exam of the lymph nodes 
  • Blood tests 
  • Imaging tests:?X-ray,?CT scan,?PET scan 
  • Biopsy:?Removing a small tissue sample from a lymph node for examination under a microscope 

Treatment Options: 

  • Chemotherapy:?Uses drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body 
  • Radiation therapy:?Uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells 
  • Immunotherapy:?Helps the body's immune system fight cancer cells 
  • Stem cell transplant:?Replaces unhealthy bone marrow with healthy stem cells
