Myeloma

Description: Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells, which are a type of white blood cell found in the bone marrow. Plasma cells make antibodies that help fight infection. In myeloma, abnormal plasma cells grow out of control and crowd out healthy blood cells. 

Signs and Symptoms: 

  • Bone pain,?especially in the back,?ribs,?or hips 
  • Fatigue 
  • Frequent infections 
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count) 
  • Kidney problems 

Diagnosis: 

  • Blood tests:?To measure levels of proteins and red blood cells 
  • Urine tests:?To check for abnormal proteins 
  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy:?Removing a sample of bone marrow for examination under a microscope 
  • Imaging tests:?X-ray,
